Would you like to show your students the ancient city of Corinth in Greece?  Here it is, live.  Would you like to show them some sea creatures?  Try the New England Aquarium.  Maybe you're just trying to explain the shape of the globe and how time zones work.  Why not show your kids live video from: London, Tokyo, Calcutta, Tel Aviv, San Francisco and Newtown.  Webcams on the internet make it possible to see what's going on all around the world live.  Below are links to some pretty good webcam resources:

Video Conferencing or Video Chat:
VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol and it makes telephone calls through the internet possible.  If you use Comcast or Verizon FIOS for you phone service you're already using a form of VOIP to make all your phone calls through the internet.

A webcam can also be combined with VOIP technology to create a Video Chat or, the long awaited video phone call.  Unlike the online webcams featured above, a personal webcam could be used with a VOIP phone connection to communicate to just one person.  Many websites offer this service for free, the most popular ones are Skype and ooVoo though Google has also started offering free video chat as part of their email service.  Imagine being able to conduct a real-time interview with a soldier overseas or government leader or interacting with students in England right from your own classroom.  Though a very new development, there are lots of future possibilities developing for this technology in education.
